Robotic surgery: Cornwall surgeon to raise money towards new technology

A 5km (3.1-mile) swim across Falmouth Bay is being planned by consultant Nick Battersby of the Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust (RCHT) to raise money for the innovation.

Robotic arms are used during robotically assisted surgery to offer further accuracy.

According to Mr. Battersby, the cancer section at RCHT needs a surgical robot to modernize.

Patients "deserved" access to contemporary surgical care without having to leave the country, according to him.

The technology has received praise across the UK for reducing hospital stays and saving lives.

According to Mr. Battersby, "Cornwall was one of the pioneers for minimally invasive surgery 20 years ago, but technology has undoubtedly advanced since then".

"We are now the only cancer unit without this among the top 20 largest volume units in the nation."

'It is thrilling'

After using a simulator, Mr. Battersby declared that little robotic arms were "much more like hands" than the fixed tools he usually utilizes.

The capacity to provide what are known as traction and counter-traction, which is basically what we need to operate with little tissue stress, is what provides us the added accuracy, he claimed.

The robot is anticipated to cost £2.5 million over a five-year budget, and Mr. Battersby hopes to raise £50,000 through civic initiatives.

The project's starting, according to Karen Murrish, manager of fundraising for the foundation supporting Royal Cornwall Hospitals.

There would be many more financial requirements, she added, adding that bringing a robot of this kind to Cornwall would need a large investment.

At the moment, it's thrilling because it's a beginning and something that one of our doctors was passionate about creating.

Up to 50 open-water swimmers, including Mr. Battersby, will compete in the 5 km (3.1 m) Swim across the Bay challenge, which starts at Rosemullion Head and ends at Pendennis Point in Falmouth.
